Speaking and listening skills go hand-in-hand. These skills are not easy to master in a second language, and even more difficult to teach.
I have taught speaking and listening skills for many years to different sets of students – Malays, Somalis, China nationals, Thais and recently, Japanese.
The classes have made me become more sensitive to cultural differences and their effect on second-language processing.
*A language teacher bears the responsibility of producing competent users of the language to lessen incidences of communication breakdown.
